“Everything in this room is eatable. In fact even I am eatable, but that is called canabalism my dear children and is frowned upon in most civilizations.”- Willy Wonka

It goes without saying- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is the best kids book ever and  the film adaptions are not only visually amazing, but also hillarious, whimsical and sometimes surreal (in a creepy way.) The original 1971 film adaption was an absolute scream, but the 2005 version brought Burton’s infamous quirk to the tale and I don’t need to tell you, the visuals were amazing! I’m sure we all dreamed of running though those fantastic rooms filled with candy!

“Candy doesn’t have to have a point. That’s why it’s candy.”- Charlie

About a week ago, I was woken to the sound of construction going on next door.  Being somewhat annoyed,  I went downstairs to check out the crime scene and my irritation vanished instantly.

A chocolateria was being built. Next door. Next door to me.

This had to be the BEST. NEWS. EVER as chocolate makes up about 50% of my diet and ever since I was a little girl I’ve had dreams of visiting Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory!

I absolutely LOVE the way this whole film looks and I’m sure I’m not alone. The chocolateria has got my mind absolutely buzzing with chocolate coordinates!

So, how to dress like you’ve just fallen out of a chocolate factory? I’d definitely start with some of the amazing Chocolate items from MILK. Check out the Super Scrumdiddlyumptious Chocolate Barking Berry Bar coordinate below:

Here we have MILK’s Assorted Choco Dress, Milk Chocolate Tank Top and Assorted Choco Skirt to be paired with some adorable Celeste Stien Chewy Cherry Socks and Berry Berry Sparkly Ring by 6%Dokidoki!

Hope you love it! Tell us, who is your favourite character in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Barbie has been pretty much everything in her amazing plastic life, but we think her coolest ever gig was as a rock star queen! Big fans, big hair, big bows, outrageous hot pink outfits, and a killer voice- she was the biggest, hottest sensation in Rock history! And of course, Barbie uses her stardom to become the first ambassador of world peace!

The 1986 doll was so popular that it became one of the iconic Barbies of the 80s Era and a reproduction was made in 2009 for the “My Favorite Barbie Doll” timeline series. We can’t get over her wicked makeup and hair!

The first Barbie and the Rockers cartoon, Out of this World, is super cute too! I mean how many rock bands have performed in Outer Space?! Of course, Barbie was the brightest star out there! Take a look a look at this cute clip!

Spunky, fun and sizzling hot, rockstar Barbie is a definite winner with us! Meg (not so) secretly wishes she was Barbie, so she was all over this!

The Barbie rock star look is so easy to put together with a combination of bold, colorful pieces which incorporate psychedelic heart and star patterns. Barbie mostly wears skirts and tights in this series to be sure to include those in your look. A spunky feminine rider jacket is also a nice touch, if jackets with massive shoulder pads aren’t for you!

Check out this cute collage Manon put together! This lil’ Barbie girl is wearing a Milk confetti hearts skirt in blue, Celeste Stein pink tights, Chocomint curvy jewel bow bangle and a 6% Doki Doki heart drop necklace, and twinkle heart ring. Vintage pink rider jackets can be found quite easily online- even authentic ones from the 80s!

What’s your favorite Barbie character? Have you ever gone for the 80s rock star look? If so we’d love to hear your tips and ideas!

Looking berry cute in 80s inspired coordinates!

Filed under: Outfit Ideas, When we were young... — Meg @ 10:06 pm

Quirky, cute and colourful, I love 80s cartoons! 80s kid’s pop culture is a big inspiration for many brands like %6Dokidoki and ManiaQ and they just can’t get enough of it! And neither can I!

At the moment, we have some great Popples 6%DokiDoki gear in stock that I loooove to bits, but why not try a coordinate inspired by your favourite cartoon character?

My favourite 80s cartoon character is Strawberry Shortcake! Not only is she adorable and would be rad to invite to teaparties- she’s also absolutely rocks the colour pink and strawberry motifs which are my two favourite things. And she has a pink cat <3

So, for a bit of fun I’ve come up with a coordinate inspired by Strawberry Shortcake. Its pink and cute with a twist of black!

I’ve used my favourite Chiffon Kisses skirt, a Baby the Stars Shine Bright top, Milk Je T’aime socks and Angelic Pretty Tea Party shoes. Make sure to accessorise with exciting 6%DokiDoki, Metamorphose, and Chocomint goodies and of course something sweet to eat too! ;3

If you could come up with your own 80s cartoon coordinate, which character would you feature in it?

The Dolly Kei Difference

Filed under: Dolly Kei, Musings, When we were young... — Imogen @ 4:00 pm

Two styles that have emerged almost simultaneously are Mori Girl and Dolly Kei. We talked about Mori Girl last a little while ago in this post, but a few commenters rightfully pointed out that some of the outfits we posted could be considered Dolly Kei. Which begs the question: What exactly makes a Dolly Kei outfit? The name doesn’t exactly give us any hints. The word “kei” (系) in Dolly Kei, just means “group” or “style” – and the English word “dolly” could be applied to a large range of styles. So let’s look at some pictures! Click on any to enlarge…

. .

The thing that strikes me the most is the colour pallete. Unlike Mori Girl’s staple creams and faded browns, Dolly Kei uses a lot of sumptuous jewel tones like ruby red, brilliant gold, deep violet and malachite green. This lends an almost regal air of decadence not seen in Mori Girl, which favours a natural feeling with no emphasis on luxury. The fabrics and materials are themselves more luxurious, with lots of rich velvet, raw silk and delicate embroidery with golden thread. Fabrics that I’ve only ever seen on heavy curtains in English castles are suddenly transformed into beautiful dresses, belted with enormous gold tassles and finished with the tail of a fox!

The look appears almost 100% thrifted, primarily from vintage stores like The Virgin Mary, Tarock, Rosy Baroque, Nude Trump – and of course, the famously gorgeous Grimoire, pictured above. What a treasure trove! (Click here for a great article on Grimoire.)

Another importance element of difference is the strong Northern and Eastern European influence – to me it’s equal parts Romanian gypsy, Russian matryoshka doll and Norwegian bunad. What’s interesting about this is that the wearers are referencing typically working class clothing, but remixing it with such sumptuous gold jewelry and beautifully curled hair that it suddenly looks rich and luxurious.

Makeup, by contrast, is kept simple with a blushed cheek, natural eyes and maybe a slick of red lipstick.

. .

So what’s your opinion of Dolly Kei? Have you tried it? Would you wear it? Or do you define it differently? Let us know in the comments! <3

What are Popples?!

Filed under: Fairy Kei, Musings, When we were young... — Lisa @ 6:40 pm

I was looking through the Electric Alice stock room the other day and noticed that on one of the t-shirts and bows there was a picture of a teddy… the exact teddy I was given as a baby. It was then I realised that my haggard, old, pink teddy was actually a Popples!

So of course I used trusty google to find out everything about my, now vintage, Popples. Here’s what I found: Popples are a group of colorful, furry creatures that posses the unique ability to ‘POP’ from a furry ball to a cute and cuddly character.

Original Popples include: PC (Pretty Cool) Popple, Party Popple, Pancake Popple, Puzzle Popple, Prize Popple, Puffball Popple, Pretty Bit Popple, Potato Chip Popple and Putter Popple. (I see they like their alliteration!)

Popples are enjoying a huge comeback in Japan right now, since their cute retro vibe and pretty pastel colours match perfectly with the recent Fairy-kei trend. 6% Doki Doki is leading the way with their exclusive collaboration items, but you can also find loads of real vintage Popples toys in the Harajuku Nile Perch store, as well as cheap Popples stickers and stationary in stores like Kiddy Land.

And to round out this little tour through the world of Popples, here is the opening to the official cartoon from the 80s. Enjoy! =D

Do have a Popples?? Or have kept something for eons, never knowing what it was?? Let us know in the comments!
